What is a martingale collar?
Martingale collars are designed specifically for dogs with heads that are smaller than their necks and therefore could easily ‘back out’ of a buckle style collar. The collar easily and comfortably slips over the dog’s head and gently tightens against the dog’s neck if they pull, back up or spin. To ensure a proper fit, the collar should be adjusted by placing it on the narrowest part of the neck and pulling upwards on the control loop. The two metal slides should not touch but they should come within approximately 2″of each other. This collar style is typically worn by greyhounds, whippets, italian greyhounds, salukis, borzoi and wolfhounds. (Although most types of dogs can wear a martingale, many dogs just require a simple, flat buckle collar. I strongly suggest using the martingale for the breeds mentioned above, but only with supervision. There is always the risk of the martingale collar getting caught and causing serious injury to your pet, so remove it when your pet is left alone or crated.)

How to measure and fit a martingale collar:
I recommend using a soft tape measure, take two measurements. The first, smaller measurement, is the circumference from under your dog’s jaw, around to the top, or highest part of their head. The other measurement is the distance around the base of your dog’s neck where you want the collar to lie.
Martingale Sizing
1″ wide (small) for necks measuring 12-16″
1.5″ wide (medium) for necks measuring 13-17″
2″ wide (large) for necks measuring 14-18″
Over 18″ sizes are available – please inquire.
(Note: these are estimates and your preference may be different. Most collars can be made in any width, so please ask.)
How to measure and fit a side-release buckle collar:
Buckle collars simply snap at the front with a d-ring to connect the leash. Use a flexible tape measure to measure where the collar would lie around the base of your dog’s neck, and allow a few finger-widths between the dogs’ fur and the tape measure.
Side Release Buckle Sizing
1/2″ wide for the toy or very small breeds
1″ wide (small) for necks measuring 12-15″
1.5″ wide (medium) for necks measuring 15-20″
1.5″ wide (large) for necks measuring 18-24″

Materials Used
Only premium polypropylene webbing, cast brass and nickel hardware, imported thread and superior fabrics are used by The Stylish Hound. Collars are lined with top grade cuddle satin to prevent any rubbing or chaffing against your dog’s neck.
